The total number of confirmed cases reached 20,438 Tuesday morning, an increase of 18% (over 3,200 cases) from one day to the next. At the same time, the death toll jumped to 425, while Monday was 360.
The National Health Commission of China announced that the mortality rate for coronavirus is 2.1% nationally. The figure is higher in Hubei Province, where Wuhan City is – 3.1%.
A Commission spokesman announced that 80% of victims were over 60, and 75% of victims were suffering from another condition.
Outside of China, the prevalence of the virus remains low, with 190 cases reported in over 24 countries.
During a meeting with senior officials, Chinese President Xi Jinping called the epidemic “a major test for China and its ability to govern,” as the state’s economy begins to be affected.
