The 2021 World Athletics Championships could be postponed one year to make room for the OJ

“We are already in talks with the Oregon Organizing Committee about changing the date and maybe even moving to 2022 to make room for the Olympics next year. We all have to be flexible, we are living in very uncertain times and we will be thinking about that,” said Coe, for Sky Sports television.

The authorities of Eugene are investing, from private funds, from 2019, for the construction of the new stadium for the CM of 2021. It would be the first edition in history, whenever it will take place, hosted by a university, in this case, Oregon State University.

Postponing the Tokyo Olympics to 2021 complicates things for the IOC. Next year, two major competitions are scheduled for athletics and swimming, basic sports from the OJ program, the world championships, the first between August 6 and 16, in the USA, and the other between July 16 and August 1, in Fukuoka, Japan.

And the International Swimming Federation (FINA) could be forced to change the time frame for the 2021 World Championships, following the one-year postponement of the Tokyo Olympics.

For the time being, the new OJ is not set, but the competition will take place at the latest in the summer of 2021.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday a one-year postponement of the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled for July 24 – August 9, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the establishment of modern games in 1896, it is the first time that they are postponed in peacetime. The competition was canceled three times during the two world wars in 1916, 1940 and 1944.
