“The American company Tesla will open an electric car production unit in Karnataka,” said a short statement from the government of this state.
The communiqué is part of a larger document presenting India’s population budget in the local Kannada language.
Last month, the electric car maker merged Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited with the company’s registered office in Karnataka’s Bengaluru city, which is a hub for global technology companies.
The Chief Minister of State, B.S. Yediyurappa wrote in a tweet, which he later deleted, that Tesla will start operations in India with a research and development unit in Bengaluru.
It is unclear whether Saturday’s statement refers to the same unit.
Tesla and the Karnataka office did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
Musk has written several times on Twitter about Tesla’s future operations in India. In December, Musk confirmed on Twitter that Tesla will begin operations in India in 2021.
