The first trailer of the biographical film “Respect”, dedicated to the singer Aretha Franklin, was presented on Sunday evening. Actress Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for her role in “Dreamgirls,” will play the soul music legend.
This feature film, signed by Liesl Tommy, includes Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Skye Dakota Turner, Tate Donovan, and Mary J. Blige.
The film is expected in theaters in December – the ideal date to enter the race for the Oscars.
Aretha Franklin, who died on August 16, 2018, at the age of 76, was initially actively involved in the development of the project. The artist was thinking since the late 1980s about a film adaptation of the biographical book “Aretha: From These Roots”. She worked for a long time with Ray Hackford, the director of “Ray”, and in turn thought of actresses Halle Berry and Audra McDonald for the lead role.
